ATLANTA – Lefty pitcher Peter Holden put the league on notice Friday night after twirling a two-hit complete game nine-inning shutout against one of the best hitting teams in the region in Kennesaw State. Monday, May 2 his 96-pitch effort was honored with ASUN Baseball Pitcher of the Week recognition as released by the league office.
Holden was clinical with his repertoire Friday, keeping Kennesaw State batters off balance all night long as he induced 14 groundouts, nine outs in the air and a trio of strikeouts. The southpaw worked quickly and efficiently all evening, finishing the complete game in just under two hours as the Ospreys won, 3-0.
It was the first time a UNF pitcher spun a nine-inning complete game since Nick Marchese did so April 13, 2019 against NJIT during his seven-win season a few years back. Holden’s nine-inning complete game shutout was the first for a North Florida arm since Evan Incinelli did so May 20, 2015 against Kennesaw State in ASUN postseason play.
The Owls came into the series leading the league in hitting while sitting atop the ASUN East Division standings. As a staff, North Florida permitted only two earned runs over the weekend, while Dominick Madonna and Max McKinley combined to post another shutout in Sunday’s 7-0 win.
Holden is now 3-2 with a 2.87 ERA, 42 strikeouts and 18 walks in 47 frames of work. The Vero Beach, Fla., native is the second Osprey to earn this honor during 2022 as righty Max McKinley earned the award in March.
UNF continues a seven-game home stand tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. against UCF.
