HOOP SCOOP: Men’s Basketball and JU Meet in River City Rumble

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The 38th edition of the River City Rumble is slated for Saturday when North Florida men’s basketball hosts Jacksonville at 5 p.m. from the UNF Arena.


LYNCHBURG, Va. – Carter Hendricksen scored a quick eight points to start the second half, cutting Liberty’s lead to four, but the Flames (11-6, 2-0 ASUN) went on a run and didn’t look back as UNF men’s basketball dropped a road game at Liberty Arena, 71-56, Tuesday, Jan. 11.

-This is the 38th meeting between UNF and Jacksonville.

-North Florida leads the series 9-8 in meetings at the UNF Arena.

-UNF defeated Jacksonville in the last meeting, a 70-68 victory at Swisher Jan. 9, 2021.

-North Florida won 91-88 March 3, 2020 in the ASUN Championship Quarterfinals, the last meeting between these teams at the UNF Arena.

-UNF and JU first met Dec. 23, 2004.



UNF has fielded 5 different starting lineups this year … Jarius Hicklen made his first start as an Osprey at Liberty.


North Florida has done a good job of taking care of the ball in conference play. UNF committed only nine turnovers at Liberty and FGCU, UNF did even better, making only four turnovers all game.


In UNF’s four wins, the Ospreys have shot no worse than 49.3 percent from the floor and 38.2 percent from beyond the arc. UNF has hit at least 13 three-pointers in all of its wins, all of which have come at the UNF Arena.

SCOUTING REPORT | Jacksonville

-The Dolphins are 10-4 and 2-0 in ASUN play in head coach Jordan Mincy’s first season leading the Dolphins. 

-JU is coming off a victory against Stetson earlier this week. 

-Kevion Nolan drilled a jumper as time expired to give JU a 69-66 win against FGCU in the ASUN opener.

-Jacksonville is 2nd in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 54.7 points per game. 

-The Dolphins are 22nd in the nation in three-point field goal defense, holding teams to 28. 4 percent from beyond the arc.

-JU leads the league in fewest turnovers committed.

“It’s a great opportunity to begin a two-game home stand and a stretch of four of the next six in The Nest,” head coach Matthew Driscoll said. “Like last year, we enter this game competing against the current first place team, which is a common theme in our early ASUN schedule. We have continued to persevere and encourage each other knowing that work brings profit.”


UNF has a quick turnaround, hosting Kennesaw State Monday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.
